Everyone has a favorite sweet treat. The unfortunate thing is that many of us struggle to control ourselves when it comes to consuming them. This can have a significant negative impact on your health. It’s tough to go without favorite treats altogether though, so how can you enjoy them without damaging your health?
Eat Them Sparingly
In spite of what many people say, sugar is not inherently bad for you. In fact, glucose is your body’s preferred source of energy. That said, it’s not a good idea to go crazy with how much sugar you consume. It’s best to consume treats sparingly and avoid eating them right before bed. Consuming sugar right before going to sleep has the potential to negatively impact your sleep. Try saving them for special occasions and decide how you’re going to limit your intake. If you struggle with controlling how much you consume, consider asking someone else to hold you accountable for how much you eat.
Practice Good Dental Hygiene
Sugar can wreak havoc on your teeth, so it’s important to practice good dental hygiene after consuming it to protect your health. Sugar provides an easy source of food for bacteria that eat away at your enamel, causing cavities and other dental problems. Make sure you brush your teeth shortly after consuming sugar to prevent it from staying on your teeth. Remember to floss to get any pieces of food left stuck between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. If you can’t brush your teeth right away, rinsing your mouth with water is a good practice.
Maintain a Balanced Diet
Balance is key when it comes to enjoying your favorite sweets. If you maintain a balanced diet, having the occasional sugary treat isn’t going to really have an impact on your health. Your body will be able to pull the nutrition it needs from the rest of your diet and be equipped to handle the increased sugar intake with little trouble. In fact, you may find that allowing yourself a sweet treat on occasion makes it easier to maintain a balanced diet since you won’t feel like you’re entirely cutting yourself off from your favorite indulgences.
Despite what some people might tell you, it is possible to enjoy a favorite sweet treat without doing irreparable damage to your health. If you choose to indulge, cultivate the discipline to eat them sparingly. Make sure you practice good dental hygiene, and maintain a balanced diet. This will allow you to partake of your favorite treats and maintain your health at the same time.
